LOS ANGELES -- Bad news for those viewers who just can't get enough O. J.
NBC Entertainment President Warren Littlefield said yesterday that the network has no immediate plans to air the two-hour Frog Men" movie that Simpson was working on this spring. The made-for-TV movie about a team of former Navy SEALS-for-hire was also being considered as a "backdoor pilot," a film that can also serve as the pilot for a weekly series.
"It hasn't even been edited. When it's finished we'll look at it . . . but right now we have no plans to broadcast it," Littlefield said.
"Look, if we want to get a product on the air fast -- I mean like "Tonya and Nancy" [a film about Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan] -- we know how to do that immediately. There's no intent to do that with this film."
During his press conference, Littlefield was also asked how he felt about "Homicide -- Life On The Street" getting one Emmy nomination while ABC's "NYPD Blue" got 26.
"Look, it was a freight train with "NYPD Blue," and I think "NYPD
Blue" just caught everything in its path," Littlefield said.
"I'm glad that we got some attention for "Homicide." But I think what's most important is that "Homicide" will be doing outstanding work this season, and their work will be noticed by a lot of people."
It worked in May, so let's try it again.
That's the thinking at NBC, which announced that "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" will go back on the the road during the week of Sept. 18 -- premiere week for the new fall season on NBC. Leno will broadcast that week from Las Vegas.
In May, when "The Tonight Show" was broadcast for one week from New York instead of its home base in Los Angeles, the show achieved some of its highest ratings.
is not the only character coming back to CBS this fall. The network also announced the return of Christine Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey of "Cagney & Lacey."
Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly will return in their groundbreaking roles as TV's first female cop buddies in "Cagney & Lacey: The Return," the first of two made-for-TV movies for the pair. It will air in November.
