The Board of Trustees of Howard Community College recently approved the promotion of 19 faculty members. HCC's faculty ** promotion system requires the achievement of specified objectives in curriculum development, humanistic education, productivity and service to the college and the community.
John Bouman was promoted to professor of economics. A faculty member since 1983, the Columbia resident designed, developed and evaluated a new economics course, Money and Banking.
Lee L. Hartman was promoted to professor of humanities. The Upperco resident, a faculty member since 19980, used collaborative learning techniques in teaching unmotivated writers in freshman English class and studied the effectiveness of his approach using pre- and post-skill assessment skills.
Columbia resident Zoe A. Irvin was promoted to professor of mathematics. A faculty member since 1982, she managed the review and revision of the entire sequence of mathematics offerings at HCC.
Virginia K. Kirk was promoted to professor of humanities. The Ellicott City resident, a faculty member since 1971, developed and implemented study guide materials for two American literature courses.
Donna B. Kirkley was promoted to professor of speech. The Columbia resident, a faculty member since 1970, was commended for her classroom research techniques and collaborative learning to improve student motivation and reduce fear of public speaking.
Rebecca Mihelcic was promoted to professor of business. The Columbia resident created self-managed student teams in her Introduction to Business course and studied the effectiveness of this innovative approach. She used the results of her project for her doctoral dissertation. She has been a faculty member since 1986.
Sharon B. Stewart was promoted to professor of computer systems. A member of the faculty since 1982, the Columbia resident developed a course, Software Applications for Microcomputers, and used alternative teaching strategies which have been adopted by other faculty teaching the course.
Columbia resident Barbara G. Copper was promoted to associate professor of communications. She has been a faculty member since 1991. She undertook a project to improve student writing and critical thinking skills through write-to-learn activities.
Elizabeth B. Doggette was promoted to associate professor of general studies. A faculty member since 1978, the Columbia resident conducted research in music and art electronics technology and created strategies to help students learn more effectively.
Baltimore resident and faculty member since 1987, Patrick L. Finley was promoted to associate professor of physical education. He completed a project to improve a stress-management course and conducted a student outcomes study using student date and peer review to determine effectiveness.
Ruby K. Meyers was promoted to associate professor of mathematics. The Clarksville resident, a faculty member since 1984, researched, selected and developed materials in support of developmental mathematics courses and tested and evaluated interactive video-disc course ware that improves student outcomes.
Olney resident Donna M. Musselman was promoted to associate professor of nursing.
A faculty member since 1990, she focuses on the evaluation of the nursing program and graduates and employers that resulted in improvements in equipment, curriculum content and process and the use of computers for learning.
Vinitha A. Nithianandam was promoted to associate professor of electronics and telecommunications. The Ellicott City resident developed several electronic and computer systems courses. She has been a faculty member since 1989.
Russel L. Baker of Columbia was promoted to assistant professor of mathematics.
A faculty member since 1991, he has produced two training videotapes for use by developmental mathematics instructors and student aides.
Theresa A. Madden of Columbia was promoted to assistant professor of communications; Bernadette E. Sandruck of Sykesville was promoted to assistant professor of mathematics; Consuelo F. Stewart of Ellicott City was promoted to assistant professor of mathematics; Patricia Van Amburg of Columbia was promoted to assistant professor of communications and Linda D. Wiley was promoted to assistant professor of reading.
All conducted a significant teaching assessment project, which included peer evaluation, self evaluation, a plan for teaching improvement and a description of implemented improvement.
Ms. Madden, Ms. Sandruck and Ms. Stewart have been faculty members since 1991.
Ms. Van Amburg, since 1989 and Ms. Wiley have been on the faculty at Howard Community College since 1990.
