Volunteer work: Ms. Gallagher is a Patient Advocate in the Emergency Room (PAINTER) at North Arundel Hospital.

About the volunteer: A retired supervisor from the state employment office, Ms. Gallagher has lived in Glen Burnie for more than 30 years and is a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd.

She also volunteers in her church office and as a receptionist at the Pascal Senior Center and works with a food assistance program there known as SHARE. Previous volunteer work includes the county's Pets on Wheels program and tutoring in area schools.

About the program: The Patient Advocate Program recently celebrated its first anniversary. Volunteers assist patients with registration, reassure them and act as liaison between patients and relatives or friends.

Volunteer's comments: "It's a great program. People really need to know about it so that we can get more people involved in it. It's a nice program for people who are retired or have any spare time. They have three shifts, and they can work any hours they want.

"I love it. It's not a job, it's a favor. . . . People are so appreciative of what we do. They want to know what's going on, and we try to keep them posted, and as soon as they can go back and see the person, we bring them back.

"I tell people I'm here to make them feel good. It's so rewarding."

Organization's comments: Kathleen McDonald, coordinator for the program, says that Ms. Gallagher is "always ready and willing to work. . . . It's people like Edith that have made us so successful."
