Kraus earns women's state amateur crown

After 10 years of failing to advance to the championship flight of the Maryland State Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship, Andrea Kraus finally got what she dreamed of -- her first state title.

With a three-stroke lead, Kraus parred the 16th hole to defeat Jennifer Lewis, 3 and 2, in the finals at Old South Country Club in Lothian.

"I had a lot of confidence," said Kraus, whose previous best finish was as a semifinalist. "I felt sure of my game. I guess it was just the nerves of playing in the finals for the first time that made me hit some bad shots, but I did OK."

Kraus (Woodholme Country Club) never faltered after she won the fifth, sixth and seventh holes to go 2-up on Lewis (Woodmont CC).

This was Lewis' first time playing in this event, much less the final.

"My goal was just to qualify for the championship flight," Lewis said. "I was just glad to be in the finals. It would've been a bonus to win."
