2 men rob Owings Mills jewelry store

Two men, one armed with a semi-automatic handgun, robbed Shaw's Jewelers at the Owings Mills Mall in the 10300 block of Millrun Circle of a large quantity of diamonds and diamond rings moments after the store closed last night, Baltimore County police said.

According to police, two men entered the store around 9:30 p.m. by raising the security gate that employees left down but unlocked as they prepared to leave for the night.

It is believed two female employees were in the store at the time.

There were no customers.

Police said one of the men walked toward a display case containing bridal jewelry just as one of the women walked away from the case when she became suspicious of the man.

The man then ordered the woman to hand over a tray of diamonds and diamond rings from the display counter.

In the meantime, his accomplice jumped over a counter and ordered the other employee into a rear room.

That employee, police said, resisted and threw a tray of diamonds and rings toward the bandit.

Both men fled the store and reportedly made their way to the parking lot and a getaway car.

No one reported seeing the men leave the mall or drive away, police said.

The women, who were shaken but not injured, notified mall security personnel, who called the county police.

Police said the men escaped with about 300 pieces of jewelry and that their value would not be known until an inventory was taken.
