Pair suspected of burglary shot by police 1 dies

SILVER SPRING -- A female burglary suspect was killed and her male accomplice wounded when Montgomery County police shot at the couple as they attempted to flee the scene of a burglary at a food store last night.

A county policeman was injured when hit by the couple's car.

The names of the couple and the police officer were withheld pending notification of family members.

According to police, the county's special assignment team had been conducting stake-outs of businesses in Silver Spring and were watching the Safeway store in the 13300 block of New Hampshire Ave. last night when they saw a car stop in front of the store around midnight.

Police said the male driver exited the vehicle and shot out the lock of the front door. The man then entered the store and exited moments later to retrieve a bag from his car before re-entering the store.

When police left their hiding places and drove their cruisers toward the car in an attempt to block it, the female passenger used a walkie-talkie radio to warn her accomplice of what was happening.

Seconds later, the man ran from the store, jumped into the car and drove forward, ramming a police car. The suspect then backed up and was ramming a police car in the rear when he struck a police officer approaching the couple's car on foot.

Officers fired several shots at the car, hitting the woman at least once and killing her. Her accomplice was wounded.

Police said the wounded suspect and the injured police officer were each taken to Suburban Hospital in Silver Spring, where the officer was listed in good condition and the suspect in serious condition.

Police said the suspect was expected to survive and faces multiple charges.
