Ida S. Lawrence
Ida S. Lawrence, a retired seamstress who was a volunteer for several organizations, died Monday of apparent heart failure in her sleep at her home in Southwest Baltimore. She was 83.
She retired about 20 years ago from the Southern Overall Co., where she had worked for 26 years. Earlier, she worked for Holtite, a shoe parts manufacturer.
A native of Manning, S.C., the former Ida Sheriff came to Baltimore in the 1940s. Her husband, Oscar W. Lawrence Sr., died in 1976.
In retirement, she was a volunteer for the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and Foster Grandparents, often working with children at the Spring Grove Hospital Center. She was also active at the Waxter Center.
Services were set for 7:30 p.m. today at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 2201 Garrison Blvd., Baltimore.
She is survived by two daughters, Daisy Abraham and Shirley Barnes; and a son, Oscar W. Lawrence Jr., all of Baltimore; two sisters, Syvilla Daney of New York City and Eliza Seymore of Sumter, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
