On June 8, State Police Superintendent Larry W. Tolliver responded to a public records request filed by The Sun seeking copies of an internal audit of the Block drug investigation.
His answer: The audit is "not complete."
But on May 11 -- nearly a month before writing that response -- Colonel Tolliver sent a memo to the drug bureau chief. The memo stated: "Attached is the recently completed audit," according to a copy obtained by The Sun.
In recent weeks, The Sun also obtained copies of the audit and notified Colonel Tolliver that it planned to publish a report detailing its findings.
Friday, he released the audit to the newspaper and issued a statement to explain the contradiction.
"The data in this report has led to the initiation of an additional internal investigation, which is the reason why I initially hesitated to release this material to The Sun," Colonel Tolliver said. "I remain uncomfortable in releasing this information due to the ongoing nature of the pending investigation."
