Toronto Molson-Indy

TORONTO -- Robby Gordon broke the Penske stranglehold on the Indy-car series, at least temporarily, setting a track qualifying record on the way to winning the provisional pole for tomorrow's Toronto Molson-Indy.

Gordon, 25, earned his first Indy-car pole of any kind with a lap of 110.191 mph, breaking the year-old mark of 109.998 set by Emerson Fittipaldi.

Nigel Mansell took the other front-row position on the tentative grid, despite hitting a tire barrier early in the 30-minute session. His fast lap, only moments before his incident, was 109.924.
