Man charged with theft and cocaine possession


A security guard at a Giant Food store in the 7900 block of Crain Highway went after a suspected shoplifter Tuesday afternoon and got a drug suspect in the bargain, county police said yesterday.

The guard followed a man he suspected of stealing dental products into the parking lot shortly before 5 p.m. He stopped the man, brought him back into the store and searched him, police said. The guard found $11 worth of nonprescription painkillers and two bags of suspected cocaine, police said.

Daniel Eugene Starliper, 21, of the 7800 block of Citadel Court in Severn was charged with theft under $300 and possession of cocaine in the incident, police said.

Man found dead; autopsy results due

County police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death of a man whose body was found Tuesday afternoon in his apartment in the 300 block of Rose Ave.

A county paramedic found the nude body of Robert Nelson Crovo, 37, shortly after 1:30 p.m. Emergency personnel had gone to the apartment after his landlord, Patricia Hayes, 55, reported she hadn't seen him since Friday afternoon.

The paramedic found Mr. Crovo sitting upright on the living room floor with a syringe lying by his right hand, police said.

Mr. Crovo's Ford Tempo had been in the driveway since Friday, Mrs. Hayes told police. He worked at Structural Steel Fabricators in the 1700 block of W. Nursery Road in Linthicum Heights. Mr. Crovo's supervisor, Larry Taylor, 38, went to his apartment Tuesday morning and again Tuesday afternoon because he had not shown up for work, police said.

A doctor from the state medical examiner's office checked the body shortly before 3:30 p.m. but could find no evidence of foul play, police said. The investigation was turned over to homicide detectives.

Man sought in robbery at Royal Farms Store

A man threatened a clerk at the Royal Farms Store in the 200 block of Oak Manor Drive with a knife early yesterday and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, county police said.

The man entered the store shortly before 4:30 a.m., pulled out a 6-inch knife and demanded money. The clerk gave the man cash and he fled on foot, police said. The incident was captured on the store's video tape.

The suspect was described as a black male, between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He had a black stocking over his face and was wearing a leather hat, an dark blue Adidas sweat shirt and sweat pants.
