Slotback B. K. Williams, whose season ended last week with a ruptured Achilles' tendon, said yesterday that he will work with the Baltimore CFL receivers this year.
"Don [Matthews, coach] asked if I'd stay around and help coach the guys," Williams said. "[Today] I'll be watching film with them."
Williams suffered the injury in pre-game warm-ups in Toronto when teammate Ken Watson stepped on his right heel. He had surgery Friday and will wear a cast for six weeks. Then he faces six months of rehabilitation before determining whether he'll make a comeback next season at the age of 34.
"I would hate to walk away with an injury," he said. "Next year I'll see if I can run a 4.3 [-second] 40 and do the things I can do. If not, then I'll go on to the next chapter in my life."
Pringle to start
Matthews said Mike Pringle would start this week at running back in place of Sheldon Canley. "We're trying to find one who will step up," Matthews said. "The position is still competitive." Pringle will continue to return kickoffs.
Newly signed defensive halfback Stan Petry will be moved to the active roster for Saturday's game against Calgary. To make room, safety Lester Smith will be cut and added to the practice squad. . . . Halfback Matt Goodwin will play the outside linebacker spot on nickel coverage.
