Hileman leads Open with 144

BETHESDA -- Amateurs ruled the second day of the 73rd Maryland Open, with three at the top of the leader board and fourth with the day's low round over the Blue Course at Congressional Country Club.

Evan Hileman, who had a share of the first-round lead at 71, backed it up with a 73 and took sole possession with a 36-hole total of 144.

Former Maryland Amateur champion Shane Patterson shot 73 for 145, where he is tied with Randy Morris, playing in his first Open in 15 years, who had a 74.

Three pros followed at 146, two-time champion Larry Ringer, two-time runner-up Dennis Winters and Wayne DeFrancesco. Ringer had 73, the other two 74.

The low round of the day was a par-matching 72 by amateur Doug Dollenberg. The Baltimore Country Club member was at 150 after adding it to his opening-round 78.

The cut was at 154, and 46 players will be in this morning's final round. With 40 and ties advancing, there were 39 at 153. Of the top 14 players, only three -- Bob Bilbo Jr., 74-73; John McNaney, 75-74, and Bob Kaestner, 76-73, had lower second-day scores.

Hileman, 31, an Ocean City resident who plays from The Beach Club, had not seen the course before Monday and was admittedly nervous yesterday, although, as he pointed out, "I don't put pressure on myself."

Still, he had to get his game in hand after bogeying three of the first five holes, then rolled in a 30-foot putt at the sixth and a 12-footer at the eighth to turn 1-over par for the nine. He included two bogeys on the back nine, grabbing the lead after chipping to 8 feet and making the putt at the 16th.

Ringer and Winters each was in position to claim a share of the lead, but each bogeyed the 18th (normally the 17th) hole -- Winters when he came up short of the green, then needed four to get down, and Ringer when he hit an 8-iron shot from a flyer lie in the rough 175 yards, the ball soaring over the flag stick and into the lake.
