The West River Sailing Club conducted its annual big boat regatta last weekend.
For the PHRF competitors in last Saturday's race, a meandering 20.7-mile tour of the bay from a start at the mouth of the South River to a finish in the West River provided a nice set of extra bonus points toward High Point scores in the process.
The 47-boat fleet, which included five PHRF splits as well as a multihull class and a separate Triton one-design division, was not so lucky on Sunday, when the scheduled around-the-buoys race had to be abandoned in light to nonexistent wind.

WRSC Optimist Series
West River Sailing Club has initiated an open Friday evening race series for young Optimist crews ages 6 and 7.
A casual and informal introduction to racing, the weekly events are open to all young sailors, regardless of club membership, and entry is $1 per race.
The only requirement is that parents help rig, launch and recover the boats.
For information, call RC Chairman Joe Chuchla, (410) 721-2318.
U.S. Women's Champs
Diane Burton of Annapolis placed second in the 26-boat single-handed division behind 1992 US Sailing/Rolex Junior Women's Champion Danielle Brennan of New York, in the U.S. Women's Open Championships sailed in Lasers and Ideal 18s at Rochester Yacht Club over June 23-26.
The Annapolis team of Dina Kowalyshyn and Amy Gibbons-Neff was eighth in the 20-boat double-handed division behind winners Cory Sertl and Judy Lawless of Rochester.
Winds were high for the five-race, one-throwout regatta, blowing into the 20s and including some thundersqualls.
AYC Wednesday Series
The First Half of the Annapolis Yacht Club Wednesday Night Series came to a close on June 29 after eight races completed for most of the fleet in the series' 10-week span.
One race was canceled due to thunderstorms, while another was abandoned in light air.
Race 7, on June 22, turned into a drifter, leaving about half the fleet, including all MORC and J/30 starters, unable to make the time limit.
The separately scored Second Half will begin this week and will run through August.
