Junior tennis tourney gets under way July 18


The 1994 Howard County Junior Tennis Championships will be played July 18-22 at the Wilde Lake Tennis Club.

Entries must be received by July 15. The event, which will be run by tournament directors Roy and Ginny Van Brunt, is for youngsters 10 to 18.

There will be separate divisions for boys and girls and for four age groups. Participants may play in older age categories if they wish.

There will also be singles and doubles competitions.

Tennis balls are provided. Players will receive T-shirts. Trophies will be awarded to winners in each category.

The entry fee is $18 for singles, plus $18 for each doubles team entered.

Checks should be made payable to Roy or Ginny Van Brunt. Entries should be sent to the Van Brunts at 6115 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia, 21045; or to one of the three outdoor clubs in Columbia: Owen Brown, Wilde Lake or Hobbits Glen or to the Forest Hill Swim and Tennis Club.

The play schedule will be posted at Owen Brown and Wilde Lake on July 17.

* Harper's Choice: 5400 block of Hesperus Drive: A saw was taken by someone who pried open a construction trailer door at Longfellow Elementary School Tuesday, police said.

* Hickory Ridge: 10300 block of Hickory Ridge Road: An apartment door was kicked open and a television and videocassette recorder were stolen Tuesday, police said.
