COLLEGE PARK -- The University of Maryland has begun to interview candidates for the vacant athletic director's job.
Loyola College athletic director Joe Boylan confirmed that he was interviewed yesterday, but declined to comment on what took place.
At Loyola, Boylan presided over a program that in the past academic year qualified teams for the NCAA tournaments in men's soccer, men's and women's lacrosse and men's and women's basketball.
Others who are expected to be interviewed for the Maryland job include Tulane athletic director Kevin White and Maryland associate athletic director Sue Tyler.
White couldn't be reached for comment. Tulane associate athletic director Ian McCaw said that White has yet to be called by the search committee. "But if he [White] was contacted, he would talk with them," McCaw said.
Tyler said yesterday that she met with the committee last week, but not in a formal interview session. Tyler, the highest-ranking member of the department, said she hasn't been asked before the committee as a candidate.
"I'll be ready if they call," she said. "Right now, we have to plow ahead with business as usual."
Tyler is believed to be one of several administrators who have talked to the committee in a consulting role. Saint Louis University athletic director Debbie Yow said yesterday that she spoke to the committee last month.
University of Minnesota athletic director McKinley Boston said recently that he spoke with members of the committee as a consultant, but chose not to become a candidate. Boston is a Minnesota graduate.
"I know they've talked to a few people as consultants, like they did with Andy [Geiger], with the hope of getting them interested in being candidates," said a source familiar with the process. "I believe they are trying to get someone who's already a Division I AD."
Yow, who is starting her fifth year at Saint Louis, said yesterday that she has been nominated for candidacy but has not had any further contact. Yow, a native of Gibsonville, N.C., and the sister of North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow, coached women's basketball at Kentucky, Florida and Oral Roberts. Saint Louis is a Division I school, but does not have a football team.
Marie Smith Davidson, executive assistant to university president William E. Kirwan and the head of the search committee, was unavailable for comment.
A decision is expected sometime next month. The university has been without an athletic director since Geiger left in mid-May to take over as the athletic director at Ohio State.
