Ellicott City woman, 67, injured in head-on collision


A 67-year-old Ellicott City woman was seriously injured yesterday when her car and a truck crashed head-on in Ellicott City, Howard County police said.

Traffic investigators said Alice Mae Shifflett was driving a 1985 Chevrolet Cavalier east on Montgomery Road, east of Long Gate Parkway, when the vehicle crossed the center line and hit a westbound 1984 International truck about 2:45 p.m.

Ms. Shifflett was trapped in the Cavalier and had to be extricated by fire and rescue personnel.

Ms. Shifflett of the 4900 block of Orchard Drive was flown by MedEvac helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she was reported in critical condition yesterday.

The truck driver, William Blair Decker, 53, of the 3000 block of Kessler Road, Lansdowne, was not injured, police said.

Police are continuing the investigation.


* Ellicott City: 5500 block of Waterloo Road: Cash, a telephone and credit card slips were stolen from a greenhouse Saturday or Sunday after someone cut through plastic to enter, police said.

7800 block of Farmstone Court: A black 1985 Toyota Celica with Maryland license plates 198 AEY was stolen Monday.

* Elkridge: 5800 block of Bellanca Drive: Three Anne Arundel teen-agers were arrested and charged with climbing through a window and stealing ice cream and sodas from the Watermont Swim Club on Sunday shortly after midnight. A police officer stopped the suspects' vehicle after a box was thrown out of the moving car. Aaron Israel Saloman, 18, was released on personal recognizance. A 17-year-old and a 16-year-old were released into their parents' custody.
