L. A. man charged in church break-in

Police arrested a Los Angeles man Wednesday and charged him with breaking into Our Lady of Chesapeake Catholic Church, 8325 Ventnor Road.

A police report said Michael McCourt Campofreda, 52, of the 200 block of South Main Street, was confronted by officers inside the church at about 9 a.m. He told officers he entered the church through a window to do work inside.

The Rev. Brian Rafferty, pastor of the church, told police he had not given Mr. Campofreda permission to be in the church.

Officers said they found a blank book of checks in the names of William and Beverly H. Macindoe in Mr. Campofreda's gym bag.
