DON MATTHEWS

Position: Head coach and director of football operations

Age: 55

Career: Matthews enters his 18th season in the Canadian Football League (10th as a head coach) as the league's sixth-winningest coach with a 96-59-1 record. A quick builder of teams, Matthews took over the 1-6 Saskatchewan Roughriders in August of 1991 and led them to a 5-6 record the rest of the way before leading them to the playoffs the next two seasons. He coached the Orlando Thunder of the World League to a 5-5 record in 1991 and, a year earlier, guided the Toronto Argonauts to a 10-8 record and a second-place finish. From 1983 to 1987, he was the head coach of the British Columbia Lions. During that time, Matthews, who still stands as the Lions winningest coach, led B.C. to a 56-23-1 mark and a Grey Cup title in 1985. From 1977 to 1982, Matthews served a defensive coordinator for the Edmonton Eskimos, who won five straight titles beginning in 1978.
