As a leisurely summer morning project, create flag cookies for a sweet finale July 4.
Prepare the dough the day before (or prepared sugar-cookie dough at your supermarket makes 24 flags). Make a template by cutting an index card to 3 1/4 -by-2 1/4 -inches. You'll also need popsicle sticks (available at craft stores), frosting in squeeze tubes, and decorating sprinkles.
Sprinkle flour on a breadboard and roll out the dough to 1/8 -inch thickness. Cut out the shape of the template with a dull table knife. With a spatula, transfer the shapes to a cookie sheet. Allow 2 to 3 inches of space between the rectangles. Set a popsicle stick 1/2 inch from the left short edge of each rectangle so the cookies look like flags. Carefully lift the extra 1/2 inch of dough up and over the popsicle sticks.
An adult should bake according to recipe or package instructions. Cool on a rack.
Frost and decorate the flags to resemble the flag of your ancestors, your state, province, country or design your own.
