* 10-and-under girls -- The Westminster Rockets won their second state championship in three weeks. The Rockets went 5-1 to win the Amateur Softball Association's 10-under state title last weekend.

They clinched the crown by beating Catonsville, 12-6, Sunday afternoon. Catonsville had exited the losers' bracket to beat Westminster, 5-4, and force the final game.

Jenni Utz pitched a three-hitter, as Westminster opened with an 11-1 victory over the Freedom Sparks.

It then topped Perry Hall, 10-4. But the Rockets had to rally in the third contest, in which Lutherville-Timonium led them, 6-3, after two innings.

Alicia Kassakatis tied the contest at 6 with a three-run third-inning triple. Casey Brengle's two-run single keyed a three-run fourth that put Westminster ahead for good. The Rockets would go on to an 11-7 victory.

Brengle was 4-for-4 in the game and hit a .772 (17-for-22) for the tourney, with three homers and 14 RBIs. Shannon Hunt, who batted .541 (13-for-24) in the tourney, was 3-for-4 in the game. Jenni Utz was 2-for-4, and Angel Aversa, 2-for-3 for Westminster.

The Rockets then beat Parkville, 14-3.

In the finals, Westminster jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings. Alicia Kass' two-run home run highlighted the Rockets' four-run first.

Kass later added a two-run single and was 4-for-4, with three runs scored, for the game. The Rockets' Brittany Oliver was also 4-for-4 in the championship game and Jennifer Sikorski was 3-for-4.

Swimming

Freedom dropped its opening meet to Hunting Hills of Baltimore City, 249-237.

Baseball

* 14-and-under boys -- The Carroll County Rangers White team split two games with EDRECO.

The Rangers rallied for five sixth-inning runs to win the opener, 9-6. Bryan Bollinger's homer put the Rangers ahead, 1-0, in the first inning.

However, they trailed, 4-3, when they came to bat in the home fifth. Jesse Martin scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 4, setting the stage for the crucial sixth. There, Danny Sorrelles' RBI triple and Bollinger's RBI single were the key hits. Greg Miller and Bollinger were each 2-for-3 for the Rangers.

EDRECO prevailed in the second contest, 3-2. Carroll got a good pitching performance from Mike Porter, who scattered six hits. Todd Asplen's sixth-inning two-run single drove in the Rangers' runs.

Deer Park Tae Kwon Do

A number of Deer Park tae kwon do students recently advanced in rank.

Advancing to ninth grade white belt, yellow stripe: Eric Brown, Derrick Ensor, Christian Neonakis, Zachary Price, Jonathan Talbott, Brandon Arneson and Matt True.

To eighth grade yellow belt: Jason Craig, Michael Goodwin, Courtney Javins, Tracey Hare, Andrew Norman, Clint Hare, Jerry Fegan, Larry Maykrantz and Megan O'Meara.

To seventh grade yellow belt, green stripe: John Fegan, Sean Maykrantz, Ryan Swope, Mark Miller, Shannon Miller and Charlie Moser.

Sixth grade green belt: Scott Elseroad, Ted O'Meara and Andy O'Meara.

Fifth grade green belt, blue stripe: Joseph Tracey, Josh Miller and Heather Lawson.

Third grade blue belt, red stripe: Bobbi Corun and Jon Corun.

Second grade red belt: Roger Swope and Wesley Samosuk III.

Brent Barbour was advanced to first-degree black belt after a demonstration of forms, self defense, sparring and use of the arnis sticks, including an original stick form. He also presented a written composition and demonstrated his power by breaking through four boards with a hand blow. Brent is the third member of his family to receive the black belt.

Tae kwon do was also on the menu at the recent group picnic, where a forms competition was held.

Bicycle Racing

The pavement temperature was 117 degrees at the Eldersburg Business Center. But that didn't stop a horde of cyclists from four states and Washington from participating in the U.S. Cycling Federation's Father's Day Bicycle Race.

Races were conducted in both the Licensed category for Federation members, and the Unlicensed for walk-ons.

Seven-year-old Sarah Black of Mount Airy placed second in the 8-and-under division and is Maryland champ in that category. The winner was from Delaware.

David Black, 10, of Mount Airy was second in the 10-12 boys event; the winner was Robby Lea of Queen Anne's.

Pete Reeves of Marriottsville won the age 40-49 race, Larry Black, of Mount Airy, placed eighth.

In the age 2-6 category on the Unlicensed Division, 6-year-old Garrett Reeves of Marriottsville was the winner. John Coker of Westminster was second, Mount Airy's David Williams, third, and Jonathan Gardner, Mount Airy, placed seventh.

Laurel Black of Mount Airy was the top girl finisher in the 2-6 bracket, while Kirsten Maggi of Mount Airy was third.

Travis Hall and Alex Dawson of Mount Airy finished second and third, respectively, in the boys 7-9 division.

Jennifer Maggi and Kelsey Withrow of Mount Airy were second and fourth, respectively, in the girls 7-9 division.

Mount Airy's Jeff Gardner was fourth in the 10-12 boys event. Mount Airy's Kris Edwards was third in the men's 17-25 division. Westminster's Stephan Guthrie placed eighth in the men's 26-40 division.

Doug Edwards and Chris Robertson of Woodbine were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 40-49 division.
