An 18-year-old Westminster man was sentenced to seven 10-year terms yesterday for his role in a series of burglaries in Carroll County last summer.
Jerry Lee Derita, however, will have to serve only one of the
terms. Circuit Court Judge Francis M. Arnold structured the sentence so that six of the 10-year sentences run concurrently.
A seventh term is triggered only if Derita violates a five-year probation that begins upon his release from prison, according to his attorney, Judith Stainbrook.
Derita, a resident of the first block of Sycamore St., was found guilty earlier this year of burglarizing more than a dozen homes in Westminster and Taneytown during the day while the owners were gone. He also robbed homes in Pennsylvania, court documents allege.
Derita was originally charged as a juvenile, but last year a juvenile court ruled that he should be tried as an adult.
