A JUNE 22 letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal, complaining about an editorial, Gayle L. Lawrence of West Windsor, N.J., wrote:

"It is unbelievable to me that you have apparently espoused the notion, like much of our society, that breast-feeding in public should not be considered a perfectly natural, unoffensive act. The next time my baby gets hungry in a public setting and I choose to breast-feed, should I be subjected to taunts of 'Trollope! Trollope!' ?"

This raises an interesting question. How would one know whether the taunter was an ignorant and narrow-minded person who meant trollop, among whose definitions are "an unkempt slovenly woman . . . a woman of loose morals . . . a dissatisfied restless woman . . . one who displays a wanton manner," or was a member of the literarily correct who really meant Trollope, which the dictionary defines as an "interjection, usually capitalized, from Frances Trollope, English novelist known for her criticism of bad manners in her book Domestic Manners of the Americans [1832] -- used as a cry of protest against bad manners or boorish behavior especially in a theater"?
