Chesapeake Classic gives youths a shot

THE BALTIMORE SUN

There couldn't be a better time to be the host of a youth soccer tournament with the success the U.S. team has had so far in World Cup play.

The Soccer Club of Baltimore will be doing just that when 95 teams come to the area this weekend to compete in the Chesapeake Classic.

The tournament, which starts at 5 p.m. today and continues through Sunday, will feature teams from nine states, along with two teams from Denmark and one from Scotland.

The majority of the games will be played on the seven fields at Herring Run Park, with others played at Belmont Park and the Essex Power Plant. There will be eight age groups in boys competition (under-10 through under-19) and four in girls (under-13 through under-19).

The finals for all divisions are slated for Sunday afternoon at 4:45 at the different locations.

Two Baltimore teams to watch are the under-10 boys Soccer Club of Baltimore Bays and the under-14 boys Soccer Club of Baltimore Stars -- both are state champions.
