Shoremen hire Navy's Matthews as AD

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Bryan Matthews is leaving as Navy's lacrosse coach to become athletic director at Washington College, his alma mater.

Matthews replaces Geoff Miller, who resigned to take over as athletic director at Goucher.

Navy athletic director Jack Lengyel said the search for Matthews' successor will center on coaches with some form of Division I experience who are certified to teach phys ed. Likely candidates are Army assistant Richie Meade, Navy assistant Matt Hogan, Johns Hopkins assistant John Haus; Jim Berkman, coach of Division III champion Salisbury State; and Ithaca College coach Jeff Long, a Navy grad.

Matthews compiled an 84-62 record, including nine winning seasons, in 12 years at Navy and gained the NCAA Division I tournament seven of the past nine years. The Mids were 7-6 this year after losing to Brown in the first round.

Matthews, only Navy's fifth coach in 86 years, graduated in 1975 from Washington College, where he was a goalie, and coached the Shoremen from 1978-82.
