Who can resist 10,000 geraniums?
The drive is long, but the rewards are great. Sunnybank Farms is in the Taneytown area, a day trip for many of us. But at the end of your journey will be 17 greenhouses and fields that produce, among other things: 30,000 market packs of bedding plants (vegetables and flowers), 2,000 hanging baskets, 12,000 garden mums, 30,000 perennials and 10,000 geraniums. And Sunnybank Farms has out-of-the-ordinary finds, such as grapevines, blueberries, straw flowers and heliotrope. Prices are excellent -- market packs of 10 to 12 plants sell for $1.50 to $2. Call (410) 775-2153 for more information. Sunnybank Farms is on Crouse Mill Road, just off Route 194 south.
Do-it-yourself home decor
Some home decorating sewing books are intimidating if you aren't an expert tailor. But one of the charms of Vogue and Butterick's new Home Decorating Projects (Simon & Schuster, $17) is that there are projects for all levels. Nancy Fleming's clear directions and helpful color photographs will have you making place mats and simple pillows if you're a beginner, chaise longue covers and complicated window treatments if you're an experienced seamstress. The 126-page paperback also includes tips on interior design, fabric selection, color schemes and tools.
Choosing a cooktop
A few years ago, about the only decision you had to make when you bought a stove was "gas or electric?" Selecting a cooking surface is a lot more complicated these days: Coil electric elements? Ceramic glass? Halogen? Sealed gas burners?
Maytag is offering a booklet "Cooktop Choices" that will help. Besides sorting out the various surfaces, it includes tips on cookware best suited to each one. Send 25 cents and your name and address to Maytag, Dept. 298YG, One Dependability Square, Newton, Iowa 50208.
Memorable wall hangings
Linda Rosenthal has been making bridal tapestries recently. She takes parts of wedding gowns and uses them with beading, silk flowers and other fabrics to create wall hangings woven with memories. They sell for $250 to $1,000.
Recently Ms. Rosenthal, co-owner of Paul Jordan Photographers, bought out her partner and opened Studio West Fine Arts in the same space. Studio West is a showcase for her wall hangings (not all of them are bridal tapestries), handmade furnishings and art furniture. Many of the pieces are made of recycled material, like a table created from hand-painted circuit boards. She also carries the work of other artists on consignment. Paul Jordan/Studio West Fine Arts is at 24 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Towson.
