State police have arrested a Baltimore man as part of an investigation into the use of counterfeit money in Carroll County.

Vincent A. Allen of the 2200 block of Tucker Lane was arrested late last week on two counts of theft and two counts of passing counterfeit money.

Police said counterfeit money was used Thursday to purchase a used car and stereo equipment from a Westminster woman who lives in the 1600 block of Old Manchester Road. Police did not release the woman's name.

Maryland State Police Cpl. Douglas R. Wehland said Friday that the bill was a good forgery but that it did not fool the Westminster woman.

"I don't know how sophisticated [the counterfeiting] is," Corporal Wehland said. "But it was a pretty good quality bill."

Corporal Wehland said state police are working with the U.S. Secret Service to determine the source of the counterfeit money.

He would not identify the exact amount of counterfeit cash supposedly used by the suspect, but a statement released by state police Friday afternoon said the counterfeit bills were tens and twenties. The police statement also said a counterfeit bill was passed at the Sheetz Store in Manchester.

Marta E. Williams, a salesclerk at the store, said Sheetz personnel were not aware the bill was fake until after the money was taken to the bank.
