A Bel Air, Harford County, man died of injuries late last night after being run over by a backhoe while doing repair work on the driveway of his home, said the state police at the Benson barrack.

Police said the victim, Joseph M. Brooks, 63, of the 2100 block of Kalmia Drive, an employee of the Dixie construction company in Churchville, Harford County, and two friends were working on Mr. Brooks' dimly lighted driveway shortly after 10 p.m. when one of the men parked the company-owned Case backhoe on a slight down-grade on the nearly 400 foot curving driveway.

Police said the unattended backhoe's bucket was reportedly not touching the ground, a method of securing the vehicle in conjunction with its brake.

Moments later, police said, the vehicle moved forward and drifted several feet before striking Mr. Brooks from behind and running over him.

Police said the two men broke into a nearby house whose occupants were not home and dialed 911. Police said there was not a phone in the victim's house.

Mr. Brooks, police said, was transported by an ambulance from the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Department to Fallston General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of multiple injuries at 11:21 p.m. Police said the accident remained under investigation.
