Baseball * 13-14 boys -- Navy defeated the Annapolis All Stars, 9-3, in Annapolis City Pony League action last week at Bates Middle School.
David Hicks was the winning pitcher and Andrew Hemminger hit
a triple and got the save for Navy.
DeMarcus Green pitched well for the All Stars.
Navy kept to its winning ways and defeated the Optimist Phillies,
16-14, in action later in the week.
Matt Petty hit a triple with the bases loaded and Hicks -- the winning pitcher -- hit a double. Hemminger recorded his fourth save and Stephen Gioffre went 2-for-2.
* 11-12 boys -- Mount Olive downed Navy, 14-6, in Bronco Division action last week at Truxtun Park.
In other Bronco action, the Red Sox defeated the Annapolis All Stars, 8-6, after trailing by four runs heading into the last inning.
Michael Everd came in in relief in the last inning and struck out the side for the Red Sox.
* 14-and-under boys -- The Pasadena Bulls upped their Baltimore Metro League record to 16-10 with two victories last week over the Emmorton Mud Hens. The Bulls downed the Mud Hens, 14-7 and 16-3.
The second game was close for five innings before Luke Samuels laid down a bunt with the bases loaded in the ninth to knock in the go-ahead run. This ignited the Bulls, who scored 13 runs in the last two innings.
The Bulls played six games last week, winning five and losing one. Kevin Wholey, Adam Raines and Mike Uleckas each homered in that time frame but Billy Robbins still leads the Bulls in homers with four.
Joe Anarino had a single, double and triple in Pasadena's 11-2 win over the Dayton Raiders.
* 15-and-under boys -- The Pasadena Panthers (5-3) split two games with the Gambrills Athletic Club Green in recent action.
The Panthers lost the first game, 14-9, despite 3-for-4 performances from Adam Sutton and B. J. Ford. Nick Klug, John Jones and Jeff Brown each went 2-for-3 in the losing cause.
The Panthers rebounded to win the second game, 10-8, scoring six runs in the final inning. Greg Tyson knocked in the winning run with two outs.
Tom Lupinek pitched six innings in relief, yielding only six hits. Sutton, Ford, Mike Drain, Marvin Hazen and Brian Griffiths each knocked in a run for the Panthers.
* 16-and-under boys -- The Annapolis Optimists got their season rolling last week with a 9-3 win over the Pasadena Saints.
Danny Hammett picked up his first win for Annapolis as he struck out 11 in six innings. Hammett helped his own cause with a grand slam over the left-field fence.
David Taylor added three RBIs on two doubles and shortstop Jeff Crandell contributed with three singles and
one RBI.
After coming up a run short and losing the first game of a twi-night double-header, 6-7, to Severna Park, the Optimists rallied back to win the nightcap, 13-5.
The Optimist offense caught fire, delivering 13 hits in support of Hammett, who went the distance to collect his second win. Hammett helped himself with two run-scoring doubles.
Kevin Eades had a strong night for Annapolis, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Chris Barrett stole three bases for
the victors.
* 13-and-under boys -- The Davidsonville Gators defeated previously undefeated Galesville, 6-5, last Saturday at Old South Field.
James Scire went the distance for the Gators (7-1), allowing 10 hits and striking out four. Pat Fitzgerald got the game-winning RBI with a clutch double in the bottom of the seventh.
The Gators got strong offensive performances from Erik Atkin, Jonny Herbert, Stephen Smith, Kurt Podrazik and Andrew Slye.
Steve and Will Maynard shared pitching duties for Galesville and gave up 10 hits while striking out seven. Offensive standouts for Galesville included Steve Flippo, Dominic Medley and David Holmes.
The Gambrills Athletic Club A's improved their overall record to 22-3 with a 12-6 win last week over the Maryland Orioles.
Austin Decker earned his seventh win of the season by striking out three and giving up nine hits. Decker was one of four Gambrills players to drive in two runs. The others were Brad McGowan, Ryan Morse and Billy Little.
Earlier in the week, the A's downed Broadneck, 12-0. Decker led the way with a grand slam.
Soccer
* Under-13 boys -- The Severna Park Sting select soccer team went 0-2-1 in last weekend's tournament in Columbia.
The Sting, which competes in the National Capital Soccer League, opened the tournament with a 4-2 loss to the Boston Bolts, the current Massachusetts state champs and eventual tournament champion.
Jon Shedlosky scored first for the Sting on a throw-in from Adam Young. Spanky Moore added the Sting's second goal on an unassisted shot from 25 yards out.
In their second game, the Sting dropped a 1-0 decision to Penns Forest of Western Pennsylvania.
On Sunday, the Sting played spoilers and tied the previously unbeaten Syracuse Blitz, 1-1. Parisi scored the lone goal for Severna Park on a crossing pass from Young, after an indirect kick by Reid Shaklee.
Softball
* 12-and-under girls -- The Severna Park Blazers improved their record to 12-2 with a 16-9 victory over the
Glen Burnie Silver Bullets and a 9-1 win over the Havenwood Cougars.
Bethany Plymyer, Christy Middleton and Morgan Reed led Severna Park's offensive charge in the first game and Michelle Burke was a terror on the base paths.
Molly Maddox, Kelli Schneider and Emily Fine combined for a no-hitter and 10 strikeouts in Game 2. Jennifer Wadsworth went 3-for-3 for the Blazers and Marianne Martin spearheaded Severna Park's defense.
* 10-and-under girls -- The Linthicum-Ferndale Fillies raised their season record to 10-5 by winning their ninth straight game last week.
The Fillies turned three double plays en route to a 10-6 win over the SPN Cardinals. Brooke Nowell and Lindsey Thompson shared time on the mound for Linthicum-Ferndale and combined for six strikeouts. Nowell led the offensive attack by going 2-for-2 with a home run.
Thompson and Jill Mueller each went 1-for-2 for the Fillies and Jenny Anarino, Teri Cecil and Jenny White each went 1-for-3. Beth Cox and Stacy Campbell anchored the defense.
The Linthicum-Ferndale Sidekicks (11-1) edged the Harundale Robins, 19-17, last weekend.
The Sidekicks were led by strong pitching from Kristin Shay and Tiffany Flowers, who combined for 13 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. Kelly Sinnen, Pam Welch and Amy Lambert all had extra-base hits for the Sidekicks.
The Robins' hitting attack was led by Natalie Contrion and Lauren Smith.
Swimming
Nineteen members of the Naval Academy Junior Swim Club recently attended the second annual Columbia Aquatics Association Spring Mini-Meet at Howard Community College.
Eleven-year-old Suzanne Gallagher won all six of her events -- the 500-meter freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 breast, 100 and 200 individual medleys and 50 butterfly.
Also placing first for Navy were Ryan Gorman (100 free, 100 IM), Ashlynn Clempner (50 back), Rebecca Lavell (50 breast, 100 IM, 50 butterfly), Regina Thorp (50 back), Andrew Pratt (100 IM) and Adam Carpenter (25 back).
Other medal winners for the Naval Academy squad were Sara Carpenter, Jenny Herb, Wendy Scholfield, Casey Kerney, Krista Gerstenlauer, Patrik Kjellberg, Rebecca Reed, Stephanie Eppig, Chris Calcaterra, Scott Clempner, Henri Kjellberg and Michael Disque.
