Democratic Club to celebrate 21 years


Looking for a fun way to spend your Sunday afternoon?

The Roland Terrace Democratic Club will celebrate its 21st anniversary with a party from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the club hall. Everyone is invited.

Tickets are $10 per person and include a shrimp platter and a limited open bar. Live music will be presented by the Monaldi Brothers.

Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church will celebrate Kids' Sunday next weekend.

The guest preacher for the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services will be the Rev. McCarl Roberts, director of the Maryland Bible Society and magician extraordinaire. His topic will be "Magic with a Message: The Bible Tells Me So!"

The Arundel Improvement Association will meet at 8 p.m. on Thursday at the AIA Hall, 705 Cross St.

Gubernatorial candidate American Joe Miedusiewski, will be the speaker. There will be a question and answer session after his presentation. This meeting is open to the public.

Belle Grove Elementary School news: Awards Day will take place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Special certificates and awards will be presented to students in all grades.

* Promotion exercises for sixth-graders will take place at 9 a.m. on Friday.


Brooklyn Park Elementary School news: Sixth-grade promotion exercises will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday in the cafeteria. All parents and friends are invited to attend.

* Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will "fly up" and meet their teachers for next year on Thursday.


Brooklyn Park/Lindale Middle School news: Congratulations to Kate Cwiek, whose art work was chosen to be on the cover of the Anne Arundel County Nominating Convention Manual.

Laura Beth Barny and Jeremy Schaffer also have artwork that was chosen to be displayed at the Safety Education Building on Riva Road.


North County High School news: Band parents will meet for the last time this school year at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the band room.

* Final exams will take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Two-hour exams will take place each day, with no lunch break. School will be dismissed at noon.

* The cheerleaders will hold a clinic from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on June 28, 29 and 30 in the school gym, 10 E. First Ave. Registration is $30 and will be used to offset the cheerleaders' camp expenses. For more information, call 222-6970.


St. John Lutheran Day School, 226 Washburn Ave., will have its 30th sixth-grade graduation and closing program for grades one through five at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Diplomas will be awarded to nine sixth-graders.


The county Department of Recreation and Parks will offer the summer playgrounds program for boys and girls ages of 5 1/2 to 12.

Programs will take place at Brooklyn Park Elementary School, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and at the Cedar Morris Hill Community Center, Tuesday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Both programs will begin the week of June 27 and continue through Aug. 5. Activities will include sports, art and crafts, indoor/outdoor games and special events. The registration fee is $70 for one child and $65 for each additional child.

Harbor Hospital Center news: The hospital is offering a free program tomorrow evening, "Stress: Does It Affect the Heart?"

The program will begin at 7 o'clock in the hospital's Gruehn Building, Room 404. The talk will include relaxation techniques and other ways to help participants better understand stress.

Heart-healthy refreshments will be served. For more information, call 347-2298.

* Since its introduction two months ago at Glen Burnie Mall, almost 200 residents have joined "Hike at Nite".

The evening walking program, sponsored by the hospital, is ideal for people attempting to beat the heat or who have allergies that do not allow them to exercise outdoors.

Registration for "Hike at Nite" is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Free blood pressure screening will be held on June 28.

In addition, free line dance lessons are offered frequently to members of "Hike at Nite." For those interested in a morning walking program, the hospital continues to offer "Harbor Hikers at Glen Burnie Mall."
