* According to word received here, 300 Nazi prisoners arrived in this city at 11 a.m. Thursday from Camp George G. Meade. They came by truck and were under heavy guard. They will be held in labor camps in Carroll County to help with handling the canning crops, it was announced. The war prisoners will be paid prevailing wages for the work they do but will receive only 80 cents a day of the amount they earn. The balance will go to the government. -- Democratic Advocate, June 9, 1944.

* The Union Bridge Farmers Club was delightfully entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Smith, Wakefield Valley, May 24. A letter from the Maryland State Board of Agriculture, "Maryland Policy for the Rehabitation of the Returned Soldiers -- Maryland Land for Ex-Soldiers," was read. In making a plan for locating returned soldiers on the land, the aim should be to develop and stabilize agriculture. The policy pursued should be such as will increase his efficiency and provide for his ultimate success and happiness. -- Union Bridge Pilot, June 6, 1919.

* The Wyomings, a "tribe" of "The Improved Order of Red Men" whose "wigwam" is located at the western extremity of our town, which is itself situated upon an elevated plateau bordered by Pipe Creek and Meadow Branch, streams in whose limpid waters lurk the mullet, the eel and the fall fish, which Indians love so well, selected Saturday the 2nd instant, as the day on which to visit the mounds beneath which lie their fallen braves, and there to scatter blooms from the fields and twigs from the forest according to the wish of the Sachems who light their pipes at the Great Council Fire. -- American Sentinel, June 9, 1894.
