Anne Arundel County library officials are warning adults to be on the lookout for Readerosauruses.

These children have one trait: They read for prizes.

By sponsoring events with a dinosaur theme, librarians hope to attract more than 9,500 children to this year's nine-week Summer Reading Program.

"We want to keep kids reading over the summer and make reading fun," said Betty Morganstern, a programming and outreach librarian. "There is a big demand for snakes and dinosaur-related activities because children find these creatures very appealing."

Preschoolers and children entering the first through sixth grades in the fall can register for the program at a local library. By reading a certain number of books a week, students can earn coupons to be used at various businesses.

Everyone who registers for the reading program will receive a pass to the Baltimore Zoo.

Several activities will rotate among branch libraries. Registration not required.

Annapolis

June 21 at 10 a.m.: The Reading Program Kickoff, where students can learn more about the program.

June 28 at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.: David Wisnlewski, local author, demonstrates shadow puppets to show how his cut-paper illustrations evolved.

July 5 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.: Cartoonist Jim Sizemore shows how to create cartoon animals using simple shapes.

July 19 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.: Lloyd Tydings from The Nature Company brings some of his snake friends to give youngsters a close look.

Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.: Scientists from the Maryland Science Center will show children how rocks, tracks and bones give information about dinosaurs.

Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.: Michael Chamber will present his magic tricks.
