Player of Year Simpson picks Utah jr. college

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Southern of Baltimore's Kevin Simpson, The Baltimore Sun's 1993-94 boys basketball Player of the Year, has decided to attend Dixie College in St. George, Utah, said his coach, Meredith Smith, last night.

"It was a situation that it was JuCo or prep school for him," Smith said. "He had all the major junior colleges wanting him, but he thought Dixie was the best choice."

Several major colleges recruited Simpson, but he was unable to obtain the necessary score of 700 on the Scholastic Assessment Test to be eligible to play as a freshman.

Simpson couldn't be reached for comment. According to Smith, Simpson and teammate Dante Williams, who will also attend Dixie, left Thursday for the school. They will be taking summer courses.

Simpson, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, averaged 21.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists for the Bulldogs, who went 23-1 and finished ranked No. 2 nationally by USA Today.

A two-time first-team All-Metro pick, Simpson was named MVP of the Charm City Classic last January, leading Southern to victories over Simon Gratz of Philadelphia and Rice of New York, then ranked No. 1 in the country. In the Simon Gratz game, he set a Charm City Classic record with 34 points.
