Teen robbery suspect stages standoff

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A 15-year-old eastern Baltimore County boy suspected of robbing a store was taken into custody last night, ending a five-hour standoff in which he barricaded himself in his house with a shotgun, county police said.

The youth is suspected of robbing the Harewood Market in the 6900 block of Harewood Park Drive in Chase about 1 p.m. after threatening the owner and three others with a shotgun, police said.

After the robbery -- which netted the thief about $150 -- one of the people in the store alerted police that they recognized the robber as a local resident, police said.

Police went to a house in the 6800 block of Columbia Road, where the teen lives, and demanded that he surrender. The youth refused, told the officers he was armed and threatened to shoot anyone who approached the house, police said.

Tactical officers entered the house about 6:30 p.m. and found the youth in a bedroom, police said. He was captured without further incident, police said.

The youth, who was alone in the house, was taken to Franklin Square Hospital last night to undergo psychiatric evaluation, police said.
