Man is hit with a bat, robbed by 2 men in Brooklyn Park

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A 33-year-old Glen Burnie man was hit in the head with a baseball bat and robbed of his jacket and wallet Friday morning in Brooklyn Park, police said.

James Richard Ward, who lives on Aster Drive, told police the robbery occurred as he was walking home shortly after 1 a.m. As he neared the intersection of Ritchie Highway and 11th Avenue N.W., two men approached and asked for a light. Mr. Ward told police that as he took out his cigarette lighter, one of the men hit him in the back of the head with a baseball bat, police said.

Mr. Ward grabbed the bat and hit one of the men in the head twice, police said. The other man then pulled out a 9 mm handgun and demanded Mr. Ward's wallet and jacket. Mr. Ward complied, then the men fled east on 11th Avenue.

Paramedics took Mr. Ward to North Arundel Hospital, but he did not need to be admitted, police said.
