You'll find marlin tournaments in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico as for golf go fish

Q: I would like to visit Cabo San Lucas, in Baja California, Mexico, and wondered if there are any golf or fishing tournaments there this year.

A: Cabo San Lucas is host to a number of marlin fishing tournaments in the late summer and fall, but no major golf tournaments.

Most of the fishing tournaments are aimed at the serious sea angler: entry fees generally run into hundreds of dollars, and participants must provide their own equipment and boats, which can be rented in the town.

All the tournaments have a daily weigh-in, when marlin caught during the day (some weighing up to 600 pounds each) are put on scales and displayed.

Side events -- including barbecues, volleyball games, horseshoe contests and cocktail parties -- are often part of the tournaments.

Whitey's Black and Blue Marlin Jackpot, from Aug. 24 to Aug. 28, is the first major tournament of the year. The entry fee is $1,500 for a team of up to four; prize money totals $225,000. Fishing starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. The tournament is based at the Marina Sol Condominiums. For tournament registration, write the tournament at 5995 Quiroz Drive, Riverside, Calif. 92509; (909) 681-6950.

Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Jackpot Tournament will be held from Oct. 25 to Oct. 29. Last year's winning marlin weighed 615 pounds. Total prize money amounts to $500,000, with an entry fee of $5,000 a team before Oct. 1 and $5,500 after Oct. 1. More information: 425 N. Newport Blvd., Suite E, Newport Beach, Calif. 92663; (714) 650-8006.

The Gold Cup Tournament will be held from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2. The winner receives $150,000. The tournament is based at the Hacienda Beach Resort, which organizes activities for the tournament.

The entry fee is $2,000 a team. More information: 1865 Knoll Drive, Ventura, Calif. 93003; (805) 644-2200.

Cabo San Lucas has five golf courses, but no professional events are held there.

The nine-hole Fonatur Golf Course, a public course, occasionally organizes one-day tournaments for visitors. No dates have been set for the summer.
