THE TEAM AT A GLANCE
COACH OF THE YEAR
Margie Nicholson, Severna Park -- The Falcons won their second straight county title despite the lack of a first-place finisher, although 11 of their 14 players qualified for the district tournament. In 10 years at Severna Park, Nicholson has produced seven county team championships, 10 individual regional winners and five runners-up and four state champions and one runner-up. The Falcons won this year's county title with depth. "We were strong all the way through the lineup," Nicholson said. "David Hatef, a freshman, slipped into No. 2 singles and bumped everybody down a notch, which made us stronger all the way down the line."
GIRLS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Meghan Cornwall, Annapolis, Sophomore -- Cornwall, who plays several hours of tennis a day almost year-round, won her second straight county title without losing a set. In winning the state title, she "showed the mark of a true champion," said coach Rick King. She dropped the first set and was down in the second, 3-1, but came back to win that set in a tiebreaker and the third for the match. Cornwall (23-0 this season and 41-2 in two years) also plays field hockey and is an honor-roll student. She arrived at Annapolis as a virtual gift to King from Bill Moldock, her outside coach. "I'm lucky to have her," King said. "She came as a skilled, experienced player."
BOYS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Andrew Carlson, Arundel, Sophomore -- Entering the state tournament, Carlson was 18-0 after winning the county and region championships without losing a set. He captured his first two matches in the states, but withdrew because of sickness in his semifinal and finished the season at 20-1. Carlson also played six dual-meet matches at No. 1 doubles without losing a set. As a freshman last year, he teamed with Jason Kesselman to win the county and regional championships and place third in the states.
