First impressions
The CFL Colts held their first intrasquad scrimmage at Towson State yesterday, minus tackling, but coach Don Matthews believed that the 90-minute workout served its purpose in getting the rookie candidates acquainted with the Canadian-style game.
"We accomplished our goal, showing the players how fast-paced this game can be," he said. "With the wider, longer field, it's more physically and mentally demanding. A lot of players got tired out there even though we actually played less than three quarters."
Kudos and compliments: A number of players caught the eye of Matthews and the estimated 400 fans in attendance. Rookie receiver Shannon Culver of Oklahoma State and CFL veteran B.K. Williams made several outstanding receptions.
Fast feet
Of the running backs, former San Diego Charger Peter Tuipuluto received special praise from Matthews. Ex-Redskin Tim Smith also displayed some of his old agility.
On the defensive side, defensive tackle Robert Presbury proved to be a constant pest with defensive end Ivan Caesar and nose guard Derek Steele also making quick penetration.
1-2-3 kick
The least impressive part of the scrimmage was the punting of Kirk Maggio, Jackie Smith and Robert Sims. None showed any
great distance or height.
Band-aid
Team owner Jim Speros has purchased 200 new uniforms for the Baltimore Colts marching band, which has continued to perform at NFL games despite the team's defection to Indianapolis.
Road warrior
The next Colts intrasquad scrimmage is scheduled June 18 at a field off Interstate 83 in York, Pa. Special Olympics will be using the Towson State facilities.
Ticket tale
In the past week, the Colts reported selling more than 1,000 new season tickets and also $7,500 worth of individual tickets for their first two home games.
MEET THE COLTS
Bobby Goodman
Pos: QB
Ht: 5-11

Outlook: Goodman, who set a school record with 21 TDs his senior year (1992), has perhaps the strongest arm in camp. But he has been sidelined the past week with a severe hamstring pull and will miss at least another week of practice.
