Sister Eymard Lora

Oblate nun

Sister Mary Eymard Lora, O.S.P., who had been a cook and laundress in convents and orphanages, died Sunday of heart failure at Our Lady of Mount Providence Convent, the motherhouse of the Oblate Sisters of Providence.

She was 90.

Sister Eymard had lived at the motherhouse since her retirement in 1977 as cook for the convent at Our Lady of the Divine Shepherd School in Trenton, N.J.

From 1947 until 1948 she was a cook at the convent at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, which earlier was the order's motherhouse.

She also had assignments at convents in Charleston, S.C., and St. Louis.

She began her career as both cook and laundress at an orphanage in Leavenworth, Kan., where she worked from 1929 to 1939 and from 1940 to 1945.

She was born Emilia Lora in La-Vega in the Dominican Republic and came to Baltimore to enter the Oblate Sisters of Providence in 1926.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 7:30 p.m. today at Our Lady of Mount Providence Convent, 701 Gun Road, Halethorpe.

She is survived by two sisters, Carmen Lora Rodriguez and Enedina Lora, both of New York City; a brother, Evaristo Lora of the Dominican Republic; and many nieces and nephews.
