Gamber Optimist lacrosse

Gamber Optimist's age 13-14 Junior B squad ended its regular season with a 9-4 victory over Overlea. Gamber finished the regular season tied for first with Catonsville at 9-1, but was awarded the top slot because it defeated Catonsville. Both teams qualified for the league's postseason playoffs.

Matt Dutterer scored three goals and had three assists against Overlea and John Ritcey had three goals and two assists.

Jared Thompson, Jeff Landow, Sean Davis and Sean Martin each added a goal for Gamber; Thompson and Landow had assists.

Gamber had decisioned Perry Hall, 7-5, in its previous game. Thompson scored three goals and Ritcey added two goals and three assists. Dutterer, Rick Conoway and Brad Jenkenson also scored one goal apiece and Martin had two assists.

The Gamber Lightning II (ages 9-10) edged Kelly Post, 2-1, in the year's final game.

Jason Holman scored both goals for Gamber, which finished the season at 7-3. Gamber's Ben Yingling had eight saves.

Central Maryland baseball

Sykesville's 9-and-under team scored a run in the final inning to ,, break a tie and beat Reisterstown, 5-4.

Blake Stewart's sixth-inning triple scored Brian Haines with the winning run. Haines' two-run triple had put Sykesville ahead, 2-0, in the first inning.

After Reisterstown scored three runs to jump ahead, Jonathan Roscoe's two-run double put Sykesville back on top, 4-3. Starter Brian Farley pitched two scoreless innings and Dave Silverstein pitched the final two innings without allowing a run. He struck out four and recorded the win.

In another 9-and-under game, Hampstead downed Manchester, 10-2. Scott Rogers (4-for-4, three runs) and Dan Graf (3-for-3) paced the winners' attack.

Brad Burden was 2-for-2, and Chris Morrison, Michael Rau and Brad Garver were 2-for-3 for Hampstead. Morrison's two-run single was the big hit in a four-run first that put Hampstead on top to stay.

Burden and Rau each pitched two scoreless innings.

Winfield improved to 7-0 in the league's 10-under division by topping Linganore, 7-3.

Winfield led, 4-3, until RBI singles by Jason Kay and Tony Calvano keyed a three-run sixth inning that iced the game. Brad Hartzel was 3-for-3 for Winfield and Jason Gorsuch added two doubles and scored a run.

Winfield pitchers Dave Centineo, Kay and Gorsuch combined to yield six hits.

Winfield downed Mount Airy, 19-2. Winfield's Robbie Harmon and Justin Benson were 2-for-3, with Harmon driving in two runs and Benson scoring two. Sean Weisse was 2-for-2 and scored a run.

In 11-under action, Hampstead nipped Sykesville, 3-2. Hampstead pitchers Charlie Devilbiss, Jeff Yingling and Jeff Chaney limited Sykesville to three hits. Devilbiss also had the key blow -- a two-run fourth-inning home run that gave Hampstead a 3-1 lead.

Winfield's 11-under team beat Owings Mills, 8-5. Zack Gayhart's two-run double and an RBI double by Greg Harrison put Winfield ahead to stay, 5-3, in the home second.

Nick Hamblet was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Winfield, and Harrison chipped in with two scoreless innings on the mound.

Sykesville's 11-under team beat Winfield, 10-7.

Zack Gayhart was 2-for-2 for Winfield, including a three-run double, Tommy Johnson was 3-for-3 and Sam Gayhart 2-for-3.

Winfield's David Kemp did an excellent relief job, striking out the side after entering the game in the Sykesville second with the bases loaded, nobody out and four runs in.

The Sykesville Stingers 10-under team ran its record to 5-0 in beating Reisterstown, 10-4.

Sykesville scored twice in each of the first five innings. Mike Martovic's two-run second-inning single put Sykesville ahead to

stay, 4-2.

Brian Schmidt and Matt McGuire each had a double and RBI for Sykesville. Nick Kraus and Dustin Lippert each scored two runs for the winners. McGuire, Joe DiChiara and Mike Dougherty combined to limit Reisterstown to four hits.

Earlier, the Stingers unleashed a 30-hit attack to beat the Royal Raiders, 30-0. Robbie Ruch, McGuire and DiChiara were each 4-for-4 with four runs scored for Sykesville. McGuire drove in five runs and Ruch four.

Dustin Lippert and Nick Sargent were each 3-for-3, with Lippert scoring four runs and driving in two, and Sargent driving in three and scoring twice.

Reisterstown baseball tournament

Hampstead's 11-under team blanked Reisterstown, 8-0, as Charlie Devilbiss, Steve Efrati and Jeff Chaney combined for a one-hitter.

Ray Causey was 2-for-3 and scored three runs for Hampstead, and Marty Kwedar supported with two RBIs. Hampstead catcher Tommy Quinn turned in a strong defensive effort.

Hampstead's 9-and-unders, though, weren't so lucky.

Damascus jumped way ahead with eight first-inning runs and coasted to a 20-10 victory over Hampstead. Hampstead scored eight runs in the fifth inning, with Jeff Mech's two-run double the key hit.

Mech, Scott Rogers, Michael Rau, Chris Morrison, Dan Graf and Pat Maloff were each 2-for-3 for Hampstead.

Perna Gymnastics

Last weekend, Perna's Level IX gymnastics team traveled to the Bullis School in Gaithersburg to compete in its regional tournament.

Kristen Totten was 9.025 on vaulting, 7.40 on parallel bars, 7.25 on balance beam, 9.00 on floor exercises and 32.675 all-around.

Jessica Groszkowski had 8.65 on vaulting, 7.15 on bars, 7.70 on beam, 8.45 on floor and 31.95 all-around.

Shannon Wright scored 8.975 on vault, 8.90 on bars, 8.50 on beam, 8.80 on floor and 35.175 all-around.

Erica Ebaugh scored 8.95 on vault, 7.25 on bars, 7.80 on beam, 8.80 on floor and 32.80 all-around.

Cindey Reese had 8.55 on vault, 6.75 on bars, 6.90 on beam, 8.25 on floor and 30.55 all-around.

Becky Fuhrman scored 9.00 on vault, 7.50 on bars, 7.90 on beam, 8.65 on floor and 33.05 all-around.

North Carroll baseball

* Prep -- Masonry Construction upped its record to 6-0 with two wins last week. It erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to break open a 6-4 game and went on to a 13-4 win over Greenmount Fuel.

Chris Wineke and Eric Etzel each went 3-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in three.

Rogers Hagert was 3-for-3 for Masonry. Hagert's two-run single and another two-run single from Jemel Hogan were the big blows in the winners' big fifth. Masonry then used a six-run third as the springboard to a 13-7 victory over Snap-on Tools.

Wineke and Etzel each had two-run singles in the inning, which left Masonry ahead, 6-1. Wineke went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and ** two runs scored for the winners. Mike Lowe went 4-for-5, scoring two runs and driving in four.

* 14-15 boys -- Manchester Pharmacy improved its record to 5-0 with an 8-7 squeaker over Reedy Auctioneer.

David Nowicki's two-run triple keyed a five-run Manchester Pharmacy fourth that put it ahead, 8-1. Will Smith was 3-for-3 with two runs for Manchester and Eric Bonito was 3-for-4 and scored three runs.

Starting pitcher Nowicki was the winning pitcher, going five innings and yielding only one run.

In an earlier game, Manchester Pharmacy beat Farmers-Merchants Bank, 14-3. Starting pitcher Justin Malbrough struck out four in three scoreless innings for the win.

Eric Bonito was 3-for-3, scoring four runs for the winners; Ricky Brown was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Farmers-Merchants Bank scored four times in the sixth inning to break open a close game, and went on to beat D.R.M. Associates, 10-2. Don Meyd's two-run double keyed the inning, which put Farmers-Merchants ahead, 8-2. Right-hander Greg Miller went all the way for the win, yielding seven hits and striking out seven in seven innings.

He also helped his cause by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Dan Young was 3-for-3 and Tim Chrest was 2-for-4 for the winners; each had two RBIs.

Finksburg baseball

* 10-12 -- The Athletics won two Major League division games last week. They scored six first-inning runs and went on to beat the Orioles, 17-3.

Brian Reynolds' two-run single keyed the big first inning. Rob Hunter and Russ Evans were each 2-for-2, with Hunter scoring three runs and driving in two, and Evans scoring two and driving in three.

Evans was also the winning pitcher, allowing only two hits in five innings and striking out 11.

The Athletics nipped the Brewers, 3-1. Jon Waller went all six innings for the Athletics, allowing only five hits and striking out 10.

Bobby Fisher pitched well in a losing cause, allowing only four hits and striking out 10 in six innings. Rob Hunter and Shawn Singer had RBI singles for the Athletics.

Carroll County Rangers baseball

The Rangers 16-under White squad took two games from the Harford Sox. Randy Hohenstein's two-run single was the big hit in a four-run Rangers second inning, and John Plunkert's two-run triple keyed a four-run third as the Rangers won the opener, 11-3.

Jason Gribbin helped the Rangers' attack, going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs; Todd Collins and Doug Arnold were each 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Darrell Smith held the Sox to one earned run and two hits in seven innings, striking out six.

The Rangers scored five first-inning runs en route to a 7-2 triumph in the second game.

Winning pitcher Gribbin struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings of four-hit ball while allowing two runs. Joe Pease finished up, striking out four in 1 2/3 innings.

The Rangers dropped two to the Maryland Orioles. The Orioles won the opener, 14-7. Jesse Martin tripled home a run for the Rangers.

The Orioles prevailed, 15-4, in the second game. Adam Crowl and Greg Miller each scored a run for the Rangers, Martin doubled home a run and scored one and Tommy Herb singled home a run.
