Marian & Murphy

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Dan Quayle includes the text of some of his speeches in "Standing Firm." One is the famous 1992 speech in which he said, "Bearing babies irresponsibly is, simply, wrong. . . We must be unequivocal about this. It doesn't help matters when prime time TV has Murphy Brown . . mocking the importance of fathers, by bearing a child alone, and calling it just another 'lifestyle choice.' "

The vice president was excoriated for those remarks back then. Coincidentally, the book came out just before Mother's Day, and Parade, the newspaper magazine supplement, carried a Mother's Day article by Marian Wright Edelman, founding president of the Children's Defense Fund (a favorite of Hillary Clinton). Mrs. Edelman wrote, "Today two out of every three black babies and one out of every five white babies are born to unwed mothers. And if it's wrong for a 13-year-old inner-city girl to have babies without benefit of marriage, it's wrong for rich celebrities too."
