Cable offers several marathon reruns

THE BALTIMORE SUN

It's Memorial Day, which, in this case, means that one cable network will be noting the occasion with a new special about a famous World War II battle, while lots of other networks will fill the holiday broadcast hours with marathon repeats of old TV series.

* "Roommates" (9-11 p.m., WMAR, Channel 2) -- It sounds important, seeing as how (A) this new NBC telemovie stars Randy Quaid and Eric Stoltz, (B) is about two men with AIDS and (C) has all the trappings of a quality drama. Quality, somehow, managed to have escaped from the trap, making this 1994 AIDS-related telemovie much less credible or stirring than its 1985 TV predecessor, "An Early Frost."

* "Good Advice" (9:30-10 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- Mine is to skip this. CBS.

* "Northern Exposure" (10-11 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- In this whimsical and charming repeat, Ed (Darren E. Burrows) interpets his own dreams and decides he's being called to the calling of a shaman. CBS.

* "The Flintstones Marathon" (6 a.m.-5 p.m., TBS) -- I could be wrong about this, but my instinct is that the publicity on the live-action film version has gone into such overkill that the last thing anyone wants to sit through is a marathon of "The Flintstones." However, if it's the first thing you want on Memorial Day, start first thing -- at 6 a.m.

* "Columbo Marathon" (8 a.m.-8 p.m., A&E;) -- Or, two hours later, start watching eight episodes of the original NBC "Columbo" series. There were going to be seven episodes shown, but then A&E; said, "Oh, and one more thing."

* "China Beach Marathon" (noon-10 p.m., LIF) -- Here's yet another marathon, this one bookending the first and last episodes of the series, and including several other key installments.

* "Normandy: the Great Crusade" (9-11 p.m., TDC) -- Charles Durning's appropriately weary narration, and the small details unearthed by writer-director Christopher Koch, are the best things about this particular D-Day documentary.
