A 25-year-old Pennsylvania construction worker was killed when he stepped in front of an automobile on Route 140 near Route 91 in Finksburg about 9:10 p.m. Thursday, state police reported.

David G. Winard of Mechanicsburg, near Harrisburg, was given emergency treatment at the scene of the accident and was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

He was pronounced dead at 10:55 p.m.

Police said Mr. Winard, who was staying at the Scenic View Motel, started to walk across the busy highway toward a restaurant and had reached the concrete median strip, but turned and stepped into the path of an eastbound car.

The car, a 1991 Mazda Miata driven by David B. Helfrich of Timonium, struck Mr. Winard. He crashed into the car's windshield and was tossed over the vehicle, landing in the roadway about 60 feet from the point of impact, police said.

Mr. Helfrich stopped his car and rushed back to try to help the injured man, police said.

Rescue workers from the Reese fire station were giving the victim emergency treatment when he apparently went into cardiac arrest. The medics immediately started cardiopulmonary resuscitation and placed him in the ambulance to start for Carroll County General Hospital.

While continuing CPR en route to the hospital, the medics detected a faint pulse and summoned the state police MedEvac helicopter to fly the victim to the trauma center.

Investigators said no charges would be placed against the driver of the automobile.
