Soccer * Under-13 boys -- It mattered little that the Columbia Select got off only half as many shots as its opponents on Saturday.

What counted was a 4-1 win over Bethesda, advancing the Select to the Maryland State Cup Finals and knocking the defending champion Cobras out of the tournament.

Despite being outshot, 14-7, the Columbia team struck early and often. Sam Lipscomb scored the first of his three goals early in the first half to give the Select a 1-0 lead at the break.

Lipscomb then struck for two more goals, and T.J. Peterson added a third, as the Select pulled away in the second half.

Sweeper Kevin Hobbs, stopper Ryan Dear, fullbacks Aaron Brown and Matt Midura and goalie Mike Dramby led a defense that kept the Cobras' attack quiet for most of the game.

* Under-14 boys -- FC Columbia edged Bowie United, 2-1, Sunday at Howard Community College. Billy Allen and Eric Folkemer provided the scoring. Stuart Kessler had an assist.

On Saturday, FC Columbia lost, 2-0, to the Arundel Top Guns at Arundel. Matt Shapiro and goalkeeper Dave Kellogg played well at the defensive end.

Christie Krugger scored for the Strikers while Rashida Walcott played well in goal and Jodie Renfro contributed solid defense.

On Saturday, the team came back with a 7-2 win over Kings

Contrivance.
