Seventh-seeded Mount St. Joseph scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and defeated host and second-seeded St. John's of Washington, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the Private Schools State Tournament.

Mount St. Joseph (16-10), the defending tournament champion, had seven hits, including four for extra bases. Eric Jeschke had two doubles.

The Gaels took a 3-0 lead after the first inning against St. John's (24-7), ranked 10th in the Washington area. St. John's shut out Mount St. Joseph for the next six innings, before the Gaels took the lead in the eighth.

Tom Ranier, who relieved Steve Matcuk in the sixth, recorded the win. Ranier and Matcuk held St. John's to three runs on four hits.

McDonogh 10, Good Counsel 5

Fourth-seeded McDonogh pounded out 14 hits, including 12 singles, and scored in every inning except the third to defeat visiting and fifth-seeded Good Counsel of Wheaton in the quarterfinals.

Eagles starter Mike Ginsberg pitched six innings for the win, and Mike Stellar pitched a scoreless seventh.
