Boy flown to hospital after mishap is released

A 13-year-old boy was released from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Children's Center Saturday after being treated for injuries he received in an accident on a three-wheel recreation vehicle.

Matthew R. Merlo, of the 7300 block of Woodbine Road, was flown to the hospital Saturday after he lost control of the vehicle he was driving west on John Pickett Road near Gillis Falls Road. The vehicle overturned, and the youth was thrown into a barbed wire fence. He was not wearing a helmet.

POLICE

* Mount Airy: A resident of Bennett Branch Road reported to state police that welding equipment had been stolen from his garage between Wednesday and Saturday. He estimated the loss at $899.

FIRE

* Mount Airy: Mount Airy assisted Montgomery County at a building fire in the 9800 block of Bethesda Church Road at 7:01 p.m. Saturday. Units were out for 10 minutes.

Mount Airy responded to an auto fire on Route 27 at 6:48 a.m. Saturday. Units were out for 27 minutes.

* Winfield: Winfield responded to a woods fire in the 4600 block of Roop Road at 2:53 p.m. Saturday. Units were out for one hour.
