THE BALTIMORE SUN

A man who was carrying a city police badge but who was not a police officer was shot fatally last night on a West Baltimore street.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. in the 1000 block of N. Monroe St.

The victim, identified as Michael Burrell, about 40, who lived in the 4000 block of Pen Lucy Road in North Baltimore, was shot several times, according to homicide Sgt. Terry McLarney.

"At first it was believed he was a police officer," Sergeant McLarney said, referring to the police badge the victim was carrying.

Mr. Burrell was declared dead at the scene of the shooting.
