The Liberty Lions had some problems early on shaking off South River in their Class 1A-2A state semifinal game at Catonsville Community College last night.

And then senior Nathalie Skovron simply took over.

Skovron scored three of her eight goals in a span of one minute and 25 seconds midway through the first half to give the Lions a 6-3 lead.

They never looked back, scoring six more times before the end of the half to take a 10-4 and coast to a 20-9 victory.

"She [Skovron] has really come on strong this season and really wants it," said Liberty coach Courtney Vaughn.

Liberty improved to 15-0 and moved a step closer to its first state title. South River closes out a solid season at 10-5.

The final step for the Lions will come Wednesday when they face second-seed Loch Raven, who advanced with a 10-9 win over Fallston on Friday.

The Lions also got a five-goal, four-assist effort from Kym Frey. Megan Horneman added three goals for Liberty.

Early on, three times the Lions took one-goal leads, only to see the Seahawks come back and tie.

That's when Skovron began to dominate, twice taking feeds from Frey and adding an unassisted tally in between to give the Lions some breathing room.
