Yankees update Yankees averages

The Yankees (26-12) lost their second straight to Minnesota on Wednesday and were swept in a series for the first time this season. New York, which still has the best record in either league, went into the series as the majors' hottest team, having won 10 straight. On Tuesday, the Yankees blew a 4-2 eighth-inning lead and were never in Wednesday's game, allowing 17 hits in a 13-5 loss. Yankees right fielder Paul O'Neill went hitless in the series finale, lowering his major-league-leading batting average 13 points to .455 and ending a 13-game hitting streak. He leads the team in home runs (nine), RBIs (34), doubles (11) and on-base average (.558). New York is looking forward to returning to Yankee Stadium, where it has gone 16-4, tied with Boston for baseball's best home record. Tonight's starter, Jim Abbott, has had more success against the Orioles than against any other team. The left-hander is 6-1 with a 3.63 ERA lifetime against the Orioles.
