Prado rides Foolish Kisses to Miss Preakness victory

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Unbeaten Foolish Kisses faced her first big test yesterday at Pimlico, and passed with an A-plus.

Rated just off the pace by jockey Edgar Prado, Foolish Kisses blazed by pacesetter Pleasant Dilemma through the lane and won the ninth running of the $50,000 Miss Preakness Stakes by three lengths.

It was the third win for the 3-year-old daughter of Derby winner Cannonade out of Ceylon Burgoo who was purchased for $3,000 by owner Philip Torsney from Maryland breeders Charles and Cynthia McGinnes.

She was the second betting choice to New York invader Aly's Conquest in a field of eight. Aly's Conquest finished second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of another closer, Platinum Punch.

"Edgar [Prado] rode her perfectly," said trainer Jimmy Murphy, who also conditions Double Sixes, winner of the $200,000 Pimlico Distaff last Saturday. "I told him not to rush her because there was lots of speed. I wanted to see if she could come from behind."

Murphy would not confirm that Foolish Kisses can beat Double Sixes during morning workouts, saying, "She works pretty well."

She finished the six furlongs in 1 minute, 12 2/5 seconds, well off the stakes record of 1:10 3/5 set by Montoya in 1989.

Murphy said Foolish Kisses may next got to Monmouth Park because "the owner is from [nearby] Red Bank [N.J.]. We'll go from there."

The $32,730 winner's share pushed Foolish Kisses' lifetime earnings above $50,000.
