The stage is set in Macau

One of the oldest theaters in Europe, Dom Pedro V Theatre, has re-opened after an extensive restoration. Located in Macau, Portugal, the theater, restored by the Orient Foundation, still conforms to its original neo-classical style but has the latest additions in modern lighting and electronics. Plans call for the renovated theater to be used as a venue for Macau's annual Arts Festival and Music Festival.

Completed in 1859, the theater was designed by Pedro Germano Marques and named after the reigning monarch of Portugal, Pedro V. The building, modeled after the court theaters in Europe, stands in a tree-shaded courtyard opposite St. Augustine Church. After its official opening, Macau earned a place on the international circuit for touring operas, and served as the site for many premieres.

A tour with high spirits

One way to spend a balmy afternoon in Puerto Rico is to take the Bacardi rum distillery tour. This tour, which showcases the world's largest rum distillery, exposes visitors to the history of rum production and the quality and safety measures involved in producing it.

Visitors are transported by tram from the firm's pavilion to the first floor of the distillery, a tall white building known as the Cathedral of Rum. There, visitors will see how rum was produced almost 100 years ago and learn about the significance of Bacardi rum's famous bat device.

Escorted to the fifth floor, tourists will enter the Hall of Rum -- a collection of the beverages made by the Bacardi Corp. -- and see all the various types of rum: light, dark, black, anejo and reserve. Excursionists then proceed to the second floor to witness the birth of rum by learning about the fermentation of molasses. The 45-minute tour concludes with a visit to the Bacardi Family Museum, where visitors will learn about the family history, see a short video about the bottling process and walk through the actual bottling plant. Complimentary drink samples made from don Facundo's famous potable at the Bacardi rum bar will be offered after the tour.

The Bacardi rum distillery, located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, offers free tours Monday through Saturday. For more information about the tour, contact Awilda Padilla at (809) 788-1500, Ext. 5229.
